Comic 894: Robot Children

Alt-text: I tell my children 'it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game.' I'm trying to take the edge off their competitive drive to ensure that I can always beat them.

This comic a likely a response to the news that IBM's Watson supercomputer beat humans at Jeopardy. We'll just skim over the repetitive, general points – not funny, detached heads, floating over the chair, same desk/computer/chair as always, Megan is the clever one, yadda yadda.

The worst part of this particular comic is the blatant strawman. Who, upon hearing that a computer has won Jeopardy, says 'does our species have anything left to be proud of?' Notice that he doesn't mention Watson specifically, because that would make the comic utterly ridiculous. Notice the guy has to be a complete idiot for the 'joke' to work.

The most interesting part of this comic, however, is the alt-text. Does he actually have children, or is he messing with us? Or maybe it is a joke he came up with that only really works if you're talking about your own children? I still think it's possible he's married to Megan.

BINGO TIME!

Bingo is back for this thread. It is too bingo-friendly to ignore.

Not quite, but I think that may be a record for the most number of squares. Thanks to those who also filled out the bingo card, but I had already made this one.

JON LEVI'S BINGO TIME!

Into the the xkcd fora he goes...

...trawling through dregs to find bingo. The man is a hero.

  1. Goddam it why are women on the internet. I guess they have computers in kitchens now but still.

  2. So, stick-Megan is always right, then we get two comics that subtly imply that they're married, which allows me to speculate about Megan's influence on xkcd. What if Randall's not white-knighting? What if stick-Megan is an actual Mary-Sue, written by Megan?

I have a theory that 714 (Porn for Women) and 846 (Dental nerve), both pointless monologues by stick-Megan, were originally based on things Megan said. Then she turned round and insisted "It has to go in the comic, Randy. Otherwise no sex."

Randall may be powerless over Megan's influence, and is forced to include all her crappy ideas. It just may be that Megan is making xkcd suck.

Perhaps he's spent some of his Internet fortune on classes in Neuro Linguistic Programming so that he can 'teach' Megan to love him. Or maybe the money went toward a Megan Real Doll that researchers have 'taught' to do the same. A Real Doll that he now writes for, giving her all the 'good' lines, desperately hoping not to disappoint.

  4. Jon Levy - go back to counting your money and investing in Israeli stocks.

Nobody takes the theory that Randall can actually get a girlfriend, much less hold her down, seriously. I mean, have you seen the guy? He's a huge fatass.

  5. The alt-text isn't that confusing. It's spoken with the character's voice, not the author's.

  6. There are no characters. There is only Randall. And Megan, I suppose.

  7. @Jon Levi: Sorry, but it's much more likely that Randall is simply talking out of his ass. Occam's Razor, and all that.

  8. Well now that you mention it, it's not very likely that Randall is pursuing a relationship with Megan, and continues to stalk her against several restraining orders. But that's the pet theory that Xkcdsucks likes to have (and by Xkcdsucks I mean just Rob - he is 99% of Xkcdsucks by mass).

So I thought it might be fun to have our own pet theory here on Reboot that directly contradicts Rob's one. Battle of the two theories if you like. And who knows? One of them might one day be proved correct.

  9. Yes, but that's xkcdsucks. Around here we strive towards a higher standard (must... keep... straight... face...)

  11. I also miss bingo.

You should do historic bingos, like the Minecraft comic. I'll bet they would win.

Captcha: cathing— n. What was once a cat but is now indistinguishable from Rob, owing to obesity.

    I have one.

  12. Ooh, and my second captcha was "warnse"— a proper mooning also meant to serve as a tip-off to a death threat.
