Comic 903: Extended Prosthetic Penis

(A very special guest review from Aquarians Love to Fuck. Welcome back, ALTF.)

Alt-text: Wikipedia trivia: if you take any article, click on the first link in the article text not in parentheses or italics, and then repeat, you will eventually end up at "Philosophy".

Critiques are for cunts, but...

Well fuck me from behind with a Primal Scream made physically manifest, but does this comic perpetuates a vicious fallacy or what? Knowledge and intellect (as measured by an I.Q. Test) are fundamentally different constructs. A subjective argument may be proffered to support the contrary, but no truly objective argument is credible.

As this is a critique, I am now, officially, a cunt.

  1. You should have posted this on the xkcd forums, then they'd all reply saying "Omg GOMH, I'm a cunt too".

  2. Okay, here's the deal: this is from 3 days ago. Probably older, since it's a screenshot of sorts.

    LOOKS FAMILIAR?

  3. This comic is okay (ignoring the IQ/general knowledge mixup) because Randall points out one of his own flaws, specifically one that we like to point out.

In short it's a basic Lampshade Hanging (I won't provide the link to TVTropes, but you KNOW it's there.)

Might have been better if he'd lampshaded the lazy artwork and the over-reliance on cultural references instead. That is all.

  4. ALT-F, here's a improved version. I fixed the tagline, just for you. :-)

  5. Okay, I'm gonna lay this here because I think here it's probably going to be better seized than in the main hate-blog. The weirdest part about this is that ALT-F has a point: IQ != knowledge.

Now, you'll say "But Mole, everyone uses IQ like that, stop being such an ass" well, I would, but Randall's fans won't stop telling me how intelligent, clever and nerdy XKCD is, the LEAST I expect is for Randall to use things right. If he's gonna be pedantic about all things science-y, he might as well be so now.

Also, I don't agree with this at all. Even if dropped the reference to IQ, knowledge and intelligence are not connected. Anyone can memorize facts, the real talent lies in making connections between pieces of knowledge and coming up with new stuff.

Conan Doyle made a good point when he revealed Holmes didn't know, among other things, that the Earth revolved around the sun. He didn't know that because it had no use for his detective work, and if it ever did all he had to do is look it up in a book. The knowledge is available for everyone, it doesn't mean everyone is smart!

So, yea. Randall sucks even when trying to be self-deprecating. I feel like being the Devil's advocate here!

  6. And the worst part of it is that the whole tagline is just unnecessary post-punchline dialogue in the first place. It's a dumb inaccurate comment about IQ AND it doesn't add anything to the comic.

  7. You fucking idiot. Yes, a subjective argument can be made to the contrary AND THIS COMIC IS ABOUT SUBJECTIVE IMPRESSIONS NOT OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENTS. What a load of fucking shitcrap.

  8. The alt-text is the laziest, most inane thing I've seen all day. That's not trivia; it's just an interesting exercise to attempt when you're bored. It's no different from the way any junior philosophy major will tell you that every academic field is a subfield of philosophy. (Ditto, math; science & engineering fields.) Also, I'm sure there's a garden path to be found on Wikipedia, using that "click the first link" method, that forms a closed article loop (of which Philosophy is not a part).

Going through old xkcd's is beginning to make me really mad.
